Vocalizing Different Issues as Playwrights in Residence
by Pearl Cleage and Vera Starbard

From the article:

Vera Starbard: How are you?

Pearl Cleage: Good. I’ve just finished up six years of my National Playwright Residency Program (NPRP) residency at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, but they have asked me to stay. So I’m still there as an artist-in-residence, which is wonderful.

“DEATHTRAP” SET FOR JANUARY 16 - FEBRUARY 16 AT MAJESTIC THEATER

The latest production in the Majestic Theater's 23rd Season is “Deathtrap,” which runs through February 16, according to Producing Director Danny Eaton.

The classic comedy/thriller by Ira Levin follows the story of Sidney Bruhl, a formerly successful playwright now low on money and inspiration. A play written by a student, Clifford Anderson, arrives and Sidney is certain it will be a hit, even joking to his wife that he may have to kill the young man and steal his script. Sidney invites Cliff over to work on the play, which is also titled “Deathtrap,” then learns there are no other copies of the play in existence. To the horror of his wife, Sidney appears to choke Cliff to death and drag him off to bury him, but are things as they seem? Levin's play is described as an ingenious and spellbinding thriller, both sinister and hilarious.

The cast includes Ron Komora, Krista Lucas, Jack Grigoli, Lisa Abend and Walter Mantani. Danny Eaton is producing director. The director is Robbie Simpson, set design is by Greg Trochlil, Dawn McKay is costume designer and the lighting design is by Dan Rist. Stephen Petit is production stage manager.

Ticket prices range from $24 to $31 and can be purchased by calling the box office at (413) 747-7797 or visiting while the box office is open (Monday – Friday 10am – 5pm, Saturday 10am – 1pm).

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, the stage adaptation by Christopher Sergel based on Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, comes to the new theater at the Ja’Duke center for the performing arts. Ja’Duke is pleased to present the literary classic, TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. Under the direction of Michael Glazier, who is pleased to lend his talents to Harper Lee’s celebrated novel. The play chronicles the social and racial inequalities of the rural south in 1935.

Jean Louise Finch, or better known as Scout, portrayed by Ja’Duke student Talia Pederzini, is a precocious young tomboy, whose innocence and blindness to the faults of her neighbors are what drive the plot of this tumultuous drama. Her eyes become opened when her father, the heroic Atticus Finch, played by Nick DeRuiter, takes on a controversial case defending a man of color who is wrongly accused of rape. Fighting racism and injustice, Atticus teaches Scout and her brother, Jem (played by Anthony McNamara), to always stand up for what’s right. TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD is an amazing story of tolerance and morality. Please be advised this play contains strong language and situations.

Two sisters working out family tensions amid a climate crisis and the settlement of Mars. Four meddling kids and a dog confront the unexplainable and question their identities.
The pair of plays selected for this year's UMass Theater New Play Lab — running Jan. 31-Feb. 22 — use sci-fi conventions as a way to look at familiar issues from a new angle. Now in its seventh iteration, Play Lab offers our team of graduate student dramaturgs and director, as well as our cast of undergrads, the opportunity to work on selecting and shaping new work fresh from the brains of emerging playwrights.

As valuable as the creative members of this enterprise are, though, there's one more element needed for a successful Play Lab, and that's the audience. Getting a work in front of community members who share their honest reactions is crucial to the Play Lab process, because it offers playwrights and our team an in-the-moment barometer of which parts of the script are successful and what needs more work. Those changes are often made in between performances. We've seen whole scenes added, even titles changed, over the course of a Play Lab run based on audience reactions and feedback gathered during the post-show conversations held after every performance. It's an immediate way for theater-goers to affect the direction of their favorite performing art!

About this year's plays:

The Interrobangers is written by M Sloth Levine. Four groovy teens and a dog search the woods in their van to solve a mystery while exploring drugs, queerness, and the fear that men in rubber masks are scarier than monsters. The four question the world they know, looking into the parts of their history they would rather avoid.

Walden by Amy Berryman is an extraordinary piece asking the questions about the relationships between the human spirit and scientific discovery. In the not-so-distant future, climate change has intensified and scientists are recommending that we colonize elsewhere. Cassie, a NASA botanist, returns from her year-long deployment in space and is shocked to find her sister, Stella, a former NASA architect, engaged to an Earth Advocate. As the twins grapple with questions of rivalry and love, humanity hangs in the balance.

Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, and $7.50 general admission. All audience members are invited to the free post-show conversation after every performance. Come see both plays, or see a play twice and watch it evolve.
SILVERTHORNE THEATER COSTUME FASHION SHOW TO BE PART OF LAVA CENTER GRAND OPENING IN GREENFIELD

On Saturday, February 1 at 7:30 pm, Silverthorne Theater will pull out some of the more spectacular of the costumes used in Silverthorne's past six seasons as well as samples from its collection for a festive Fashion Show. This free event will celebrate Silverthorne’s new tenancy in the LAVA Center, the arts incubation space in downtown Greenfield at 324 Main Street. Space is limited – seating will be on a first-come basis.
Over the years, Silverthorne Theater has amassed a large collection of costumes for a wide range of shows. Some are original creations, built for specific characters. Others were bought and adapted for shows. A large number of period pieces were donated by generous Silverthorne fans.  Many will be featured in the Fashion Show.

An extra added attraction will be "THESE SHOES WEREN'T MADE FOR WALKING" - a display of some of the outrageous footwear from STC's collection - up for auction! Visitors to the LAVA Center throughout the weekend will be able to bid on a selection of utterly amazing shoes. Proceeds will benefit STC’s upcoming Theater Thursdays New Play Reading Series. More information

Auditions: Performers needed for Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play

What will endure when the cataclysm arrives—when the grid fails, society crumbles, and we’re faced with the task of rebuilding?

Director Erin Nicole Eggers is seeking a joyful and eclectic group of storytellers for Mr. Burns, a post-electric play, the final show of the mainstage season.
AUDITIONS are scheduled for Jan. 27 & 28, 6-10 p.m., in FAC 204, with callbacks Jan. 29 & 30.
Sign up for an audition slot at SignUp Genius.

About the play
Anne Washburn’s imaginative dark comedy propels us forward nearly a century, following a new civilization stumbling into its future.
After the collapse of civilization, a group of survivors share a campfire and begin to piece together the plot of The Simpsons episode "Cape Feare" entirely from memory. Seven years later, this and other snippets of pop culture (sitcom plots, commercials, jingles, and pop songs) have become the live entertainment of a post-apocalyptic society, sincerely trying to hold onto its past. 75 years later, these are the myths and legends from which new forms of performance are created.
A paean to live theater, and the resilience of Bart Simpson through the ages, Mr. Burns is an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another.

The Penelopiad

by Margaret Atwood
directed by Tara Franklin

As portrayed in Homer’s ‘Odyssey’, Penelope - wife of Odysseus and cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy - has become a symbol of wifely duty and devotion, enduring twenty years of waiting when her husband goes to fight in the Trojan War. As she fends off the attentions of a hundred greedy suitors, travelling minstrels regale her with news of Odysseus’ epic adventures around the Mediterranean - slaying monsters and grappling with amorous goddesses. When Odysseus finally comes home, he kills her suitors and then, in an act that served as little more than a footnote in Homer’s original story, ruthlessly hangs Penelope’s twelve maids. Now, Penelope and her chorus of wronged maids tell their side of the story in a new stage version by Margaret Atwood, adapted from her own wry, witty and wise novel.

FULL LISTING

The Play Reading Co-op is currently seeking submissions of full length plays from New England writers for a monthly, ongoing reading series. The mission of the co-op is simply for local theater makers to have a chance to get in a room together to work on high quality material for our own learning, enjoyment, and camaraderie. It's also a great way to learn about new works and writers. The reading is intended to be informal and without an audience other than other co-op “members” and potentially a friend or colleague(s) of the writer. If the writer is looking for a discussion or feedback afterward, we are happy to make space for that as well. We are ideally looking for plays with at least 2 female identifying roles.
