Led by the pandemic and long-pent-up demands for racial and social justice, this revolution is challenging the basic assumptions, structures, and values that have dominated the field for decades. Although we are familiar with how these powerful forces are affecting our theatres, we are less familiar with how they are affecting our boards. But our boards are also undergoing a revolution, a revolution in their membership, in how they structure and use power, and in the foundational values of their work. I want to explore this revolution by looking first at our historic model of governing, then at the challenges to that model, and, finally, at some of the exciting early responses to those challenges. Send it to me! pioneervalleytheatre@gmail.com PERFORMANCES BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY COMES HOME TO MAJESTIC THEATER MAY 25 THROUGH JUNE 4   The life story of one of the most influential pioneers of 1950’s rock and roll comes to the Majestic Theater with the return of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story April 13 through May 28.  The rock musical by Alan James was the first play presented when the Majestic re-opened to the public in March 1997, and it became an immediate crowd-pleaser.   The play follows the musical path of the young man from Lubbock, Texas who created some of rock’s first big hits including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Rave On,” “Oh Boy,” and “Peggy Sue,” among others featured in the show.  Holly led the way in writing and producing his own songs, as well as playing all the instruments with his band, The Crickets.  Buddy also features many other hit tunes of the era including “Chantilly Lace” and “La Bamba.”   Cast members include Dan Whelton, Caleb Koval, Shaun O’Keefe, Tina Sparkle, Josh Karam, Jacob Nichols, Chelsea Nectow, Josh Mason, Steve Henderson and Brad Shepard.  Producing Director Danny Eaton will direct the play, and Sue Dziura is associate producing director.  Music director is Mitch Chakour and Stephen Petit is production stage manager.  Set director/technical director is Josiah Durham, and Dawn McKay is costume designer.  Dan Rist is lighting designer and sound design is being handled by Doug Wallace.   According to Eaton, “The demand for another presentation of Buddy has never subsided.  Over the years our audience members have kept requesting that we present the show again, and we figured it would be a great addition to our 25th Anniversary Season at the Majestic.  The show is timeless, the songs are brilliant, and the story of Buddy Holly, one of the most talented and endearing figures in early rock and roll, has touched audiences around the world.”   Ticket prices range from $31 - $37 and can be obtained by visiting or calling the box office at (413) 747-7797 during hours of operation (Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)   Effective March 2023, audience members are encouraged to wear face masks, but they are no longer required at the Majestic.  Doors to the theater will open one hour before the start of a show, which is also when the café opens.  For more information, visit www.majestictheater.com Sunderland Public Library Court Dorsey Performs the Short Story, "The Face in the Mirror" May 31 at 6:30 PM Sunderland Public Library Actor Court Dorsey of Wendell will read “The Face in the Mirror,” a short story by Mohsin Hamid originally published in the New Yorker based on his novel, The Last White Man,.  As with the book, the story describes a mysterious disease that causes a darkening of the complexion of white people.  The protagonist, Anders, deals with his new identity as a person of color and expresses a whole range of emotions.  The ingenious plot is a provocative one, with obvious racial overtones.  It literally puts white people in the shoes of people of color.  It is an eye-opening story. Mr. Dorsey is an accomplished actor who has performed widely throughout the Pioneer Valley and with more than three dozen theater companies across North America and Europe. Dorsey is perhaps best known as the creative force behind “Project Unspeakable,” a theatrical performance that looks at the political meanings behind the assassinations of JFK, RFK, M.L. King, and Malcolm X.  For several seasons, he has played William Cullen Bryant at Bryant’s homestead in Cummington, MA.  Mr. Dorsey also works as mediator with the Collaborative Resolutions Group in Greenfield. This event is free and open to the public. Shakespeare Stage presents Twelfth Night at the Academy of Music, with performances on June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2023, at 7:30 pm. For the past few months, LAVA has hosted a theater incubation series, during which six local playwrights have workshopped and developed new plays. Now they’re ready for an audience! Schedule: An Interview with Archie by John McDonnell Tierney Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, 7 p.m. Interview with Archie is a new play by John McDonnell Tierney that focuses on two themes — faith and dementia — and yet it is not “about” either. Rather, this play explores the experience of two men-of-the-cloth, one old, one young, with faith and dementia. Archie, a 90 year old retired Catholic Bishop who doesn’t believe Heaven exists, meets Elijah, a 20-year old Evangelical Seminarian whose whole purpose in life is to get to there. John McDonnell Tierney, aka “Jack McT,” is a composer and playwright with an Off-Broadway track record and numerous plays and musicals in his portfolio. His musical, Humanity’s Child, premiered at the New York Theater Festival and played four weeks at the Players Theatre Off- Broadway in 2019. Extraordinary Hero, Jack’s full-length musical for virtual theater, was streamed on the Rogue Theatre Festival, 2022 and a trio of his comedies will play at the 2023 Festival in July. He is a contributing playwright to several online theater groups and is a director and actor as well. Jack works out of his home studio in Heath, MA where he lives with his wife Patricia and cat Willow. “Time in Tatters” by Silvia Martinez-Howard “Inheritance” by Nina Gross Friday and Saturday, June 9 and 10, 7 p.m. “Time in Tatters” by Silvia Martinez-Howard This is a story of identity, uprooting, exile and traumas of war. Silvia is a native of Argentina, who produced events for Amnesty International, in honor of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, and to the Minority Task Force on Aids, in New York City. Her eclectic work encompasses poetry, playwriting, ceramic sculpture, photography, textiles and jewelry. She teaches Spanish and loves cooking. “Inheritance” by Nina Gross Details to come.   “750%” by Christine Benvenuto Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” adapted by P. H. Crosby Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17, 7 p.m. “750%” by Christine Benvenuto A seemingly random encounter on a subway platform brings two people together. As their story unfolds, who they are and who they are to each other, their shared past and separate futures, turn out to be as labile and unstable as the intimate partner violence that has brought them to this moment. “750%” will be performed by Shannon Chabot and Mary Budzn. Christine Benvenuto’s plays have been produced by the Boston Theater Marathon, the Sixth Festival in NYC, The Braid in Los Angeles, and online. Her play Bridges was part of The LAVA Center’s social justice series last year. Her play Destination Wedding received its first public reading at LAVA last summer, and its second at Clamour Theater in Northern Florida as part of a playwright’s residency in March. She is the author of two books published by St. Martin’s Press, and her short stories, essays, and articles have appeared in many newspapers, magazines and anthologies. Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” adapted by P. H. Crosby Who is Bartleby? Where did he come from? What does he want? The head of a Wall Street law firm in the 1860s wrestles with proper management of his office staff, including a strange newcomer. “Bartleby the Scrivener” will be performed by Rick Malone, Tracy Trimm, Kevin McVeigh, Becca Mandel and Andra Daunhauer. P. H. Crosby, a resident of Gill, is a writer of poetry, fiction and drama, published in Changing Men, The Other Side, War, Literature and the Arts (WLA), the Montague Reporter, Sparks of Calliope, Friends Journal, Blue Unicorn and other venues. A short play, “A Change in Climate” was produced online in 2020 by The LAVA Center, where Crosby’s adaptation of George Gissing’s The Odd Women also received a two-part stage reading in 2022 and 2023. Crosby has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University and studied English and Drama at Catholic University and Greenfield Community College. As We Were: Nine Days in October by Jan Maher Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, 7 p.m. Over sixty years ago, Bob Dylan recorded his first album, "Rocky and Bullwinkle" dominated Saturday morning television, and the world teetered on the precipice of all out nuclear war. As We Were: Nine Days in October focuses on the impact of the Cuban Missile Crisis on the lives of ten students on a Midwestern campus. In the lounge of their small college, the students play chess, cards, and guitars; discuss homework, music, and Halloween pranks; flirt and banter. Abruptly, their cocoon is ripped open by JFK’s announcement that the world is on the brink of nuclear war. Each is wrenched into stark confrontations with identity, sexuality, values, mortality, themselves, and each other. The Cuban Missile Crisis ends a mere nine days after JFK’s speech to the nation, but during that time the students and their world—our world—are forever changed. Playwright Jan Maher was a freshman in college during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Events depicted are, as they say, “based on a true story,” though Maher freely admits she is primarily a writer of fiction. All plays are also viewable online for two weeks. The Hidden Territories of the Bacchae  Directed by Stacy Klein Co-created with the DE Ensemble After a sold-out run in 2022, we are happy to bring back The Hidden Territories of the Bacchae. We look forward to sharing a further developed and re-imagined version of this work: our response to Euripides' Bacchae in which women's rites are no longer in hidden territories but freely able to express their deeply held desires. Summer Young Company is designed for young actors who wish to engage deeply with Shakespeare’s work through a more rigorous exploration of text, introductory voice, movement, ensemble building, and more. It's an extension of the Fall Festival of Shakespeare, Spring Young Company, and Riotous Company programs, and is ideal for local participants or those with access to local housing or personal transportation to/from local rehearsal spaces.  The program runs Monday through Friday, 9am – 3:30pm, with a break for lunch. Mornings are set aside for classes, while the afternoon is dedicated to creating and rehearsing. Final performances are Friday, July 28 at The Dell at The Mount, Edith Wharton's home, and Saturday, July 29 at Shakespeare & Company’s Rose Footprint Theatre. Majestic Theater Scenic Carpenter & Buildings Maintenance This new entry-level position at the Majestic Theater is our attempt to combine two part-time jobs into one full-time job with the following responsibilities: Assist the Majestic’s Technical Director with the construction and installation of five season productions' sets and various other theatrical projects.   Basic carpentry skills required, tools will be provided, and building techniques unique to the theater will be taught.   Provide basic maintenance, cleaning and snow shoveling of the Majestic Theater’s three buildings (theater, shop/rehearsal, and actor house).  Coordinate sub-contractors providing any maintenance services related to electrical, plumbing or HVAC.   Help to support and supply the Majestic Café’s operation. The time spent on these two tasks will be determined by the Majestic’s production schedule.  Candidates for this position should be upbeat, and willing to join a team that will work together to get the job done!   There will be the opportunity to learn about many aspects of the theater. Compensation will be hourly with an average week being 40 hours.   During weeks that season production sets are being installed at the Majestic Theater the work hours will increase.   The pay rate will be $16 to $19 per hour depending upon past experience and skills, with benefits to be reviewed.   Valid driver’s license required.  The Majestic Theater is an inclusive employer. To apply for this position, please email:  sue@majestictheater.com The Northampton Arts Council is now accepting performer applications for First Night Northampton 2024 On Sunday, December 31, 2023, the Northampton Arts Council will present the 38th annual community New Year’s Eve celebration and festival of performing arts. Since 1985, First Night Northampton has filled our Paradise City with a 12-hour family-friendly festival of the arts, culminating in a traditional ball-raising from the roof of the Hotel Northampton. Proceeds from First Night Northampton will benefit local artists and community arts activities. We look forward to receiving many proposals and creating a diverse, exciting, family-friendly event. The deadline to apply is August 31, 2023. Proposals are reviewed as they are received, so early applications are recommended. Please submit separate applications for each proposal. Proposals without support materials will not be reviewed. We will be notifying applicants at the end of October. LIZZIE is four women fronting a six-piece rock band. LIZZIE is rage, sex, betrayal, and bloody murder. LIZZIE is American mythology set to a blistering rock score. The audience will be guided through 10 minutes of feedback where they aim to only answer and address the questions that the presenting artists has asked.
