THIS WEEK IN THEATRE NEWS:
That Which We Call a Struggle: A Response to Ife Olujobi’s “$5000”
by Chris Myers
From the article:
Every time someone dares speak up about money in the nonprofit professional theatre, folks tend to listen. For the artists among them, I suspect it’s because they’re probably receiving what are more or less subsistence wages for their work. They—we—get by moonlighting secondary careers, going into debt, marrying up, rotating through government services, and/or utilizing family support. Along the way, we simply grit our teeth and smile. Why we’re still smiling at this point, we’re not quite sure. The glow of working in “the biz” wears thin when bills keep piling up and income remains tenuous. So when someone says “this is madness” instead of “this is fine” we all tend to reply: “THIS.” There is collective yearning for something more.
