Turning Political Violence into Entertainment in Hate Radio
by Joseph Dunne-Howrie
From the article:
The artistic director of the International Institute for Political Murder, Milo Rau, took his 2011 show Hate Radio to Battersea Arts Centre in London in April this year. Hate Radio works as disturbing historical investigation into the underexamined tragedy of the Rwandan genocide. It also raises important questions about the culpability of media for normalizing racism, violence, and conspiracy theories, and about the responsibility of journalists and editors for the appalling consequences such dehumanizing narratives lead to. There are worrying signs of this process happening in the United States and United Kingdom today.
