Creating Trust Through Money: A Conversation on the Common Wallet Project
by Tiziana Penna and Anna Rispoli

From the article:

In January 2018, a group of artists and cultural workers based in Brussels—including us, Tiziana Penna and Anna Rispoli—committed to living from the same bank account. All income we receive through wages, unemployment, and other benefits is wired into this shared account. From there, we don’t withdraw the same amount we wired in, but whatever amount each one of us feels we need to live our life, including money for mortgage payments, rent, utilities, childcare, monthly savings, groceries, and clothes, but also for holidays, hobbies, going out, and all the unnecessary consumerism one is drawn to. The initiative is called the Common Wallet, and through it our group wants to develop more radical forms of solidarity, kinship, trust, as well as a thorough questioning of and experimenting with different possible relationships to money.

Beatrice's Dragon is a new play that was written by the director in a playwriting class in the fall of 2022. This performance is part of the longer process of new play development and has come about after edits, revisions, and work with a dramaturg. The play tells the story of three women who work at a tavern in a small town and whose once-stagnant lives are changed forever by the discovery of a dragon egg in the middle of the woods. It is a story both magical and quotidian about finding your path and making your choice —with a healthy dose of fairies, ghosts, evil villains, and restaurant drama sprinkled throughout. Fully booked, waitlist at the door.

Dolls of New Albion: A Steampunk Opera
by Paul Shapera
directed by Michael Donnelly

Curtain Theater
The Dolls of New Albion is a musical about death, love, obsession, and loneliness. A whirlwind of sound weaving the tale of lost and fabled New Albion, a place full of steampunk whimsy: airships, sentient plants, alchemists, machines of billowing smoke, and Annabel McAlistair, who’s raising up the dead into the titular clockwork dolls. This hectic journey through New Albion, its wonders and its tragedies, shows not only the self-destructive potential of loneliness and obsession, but the reconstructive power of genuine, meaningful human connection.

BUDDY: THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY COMES HOME TO MAJESTIC THEATER
MAY 18 THROUGH JUNE 4

The life story of one of the most influential pioneers of 1950’s rock and roll comes to the Majestic Theater with the return of Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story April 13 through May 28.  The rock musical by Alan James was the first play presented when the Majestic re-opened to the public in March 1997, and it became an immediate crowd-pleaser.

The play follows the musical path of the young man from Lubbock, Texas who created some of rock’s first big hits including “That’ll Be the Day,” “Rave On,” “Oh Boy,” and “Peggy Sue,” among others featured in the show.  Holly led the way in writing and producing his own songs, as well as playing all the instruments with his band, The Crickets.  Buddy also features many other hit tunes of the era including “Chantilly Lace” and “La Bamba.”

Cast members include Dan Whelton, Caleb Koval, Shaun O’Keefe, Tina Sparkle, Josh Karam, Jacob Nichols, Chelsea Nectow, Josh Mason, Steve Henderson and Brad Shepard.  Producing Director Danny Eaton will direct the play, and Sue Dziura is associate producing director.  Music director is Mitch Chakour and Stephen Petit is production stage manager.  Set director/technical director is Josiah Durham, and Dawn McKay is costume designer.  Dan Rist is lighting designer and sound design is being handled by Doug Wallace.

According to Eaton, “The demand for another presentation of Buddy has never subsided.  Over the years our audience members have kept requesting that we present the show again, and we figured it would be a great addition to our 25th Anniversary Season at the Majestic.  The show is timeless, the songs are brilliant, and the story of Buddy Holly, one of the most talented and endearing figures in early rock and roll, has touched audiences around the world.”

Ticket prices range from $31 - $37 and can be obtained by visiting or calling the box office at (413) 747-7797 during hours of operation (Monday-Friday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)

Effective March 2023, audience members are encouraged to wear face masks, but they are no longer required at the Majestic.  Doors to the theater will open one hour before the start of a show, which is also when the café opens.  For more information, visit www.majestictheater.com
What:   FREE workshop readings of a new play
A special project of The Medical Reserve Corps of Franklin County

When & Where:
Wednesday May 24   11am - South County Senior Center, South Deerfield

About the play:
The voices of older adults living in western Massachusetts combine to form the core of this performance experience that reflects the drama, the conflict, the inexplicable, and the (un)reality of adapting to constant change during the COVID-19 pandemic.

These first-person stories– sometimes poignant or sad, sometimes humorous, or joyful - are supplemented by narratives from members of the Medical Reserve Corps and others who worked in hospitals, clinics, and vaccination sites.  Together, the stories offer rich insights- and some surprises- into how those of us in rural Massachusetts navigated the unknown territory of a global public health crisis.

A talkback after each workshop reading will provide an opportunity for the audience to respond to the production and contribute their insights towards the further development of the project.

This performance is co-sponsored by Greenfield Community College’s Department of Community Engagement and the Franklin Medical Reserve Corps. This program is supported in part by grants from the Buckland, Deerfield, Greenfield, and Sunderland local cultural councils, local agencies which are supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

The Franklin Medical Reserve Corps partnered with Greenfield Community College’s Department of Community Engagement to interview and record the oral histories of 27 older adults in our area. These recordings are archived in Digital Commonwealth, a digital archive managed by the Boston Public Library.

Festival of new play readings by local playwrights to take place at The LAVA Center in June

On the Boards: a festival of new play readings by local playwrights
Fridays and Saturdays in June, 7 p.m. (see complete schedule below)
The LAVA Center, 324 Main St., Greenfield

The LAVA Center is proud to present “On the Boards,” a festival of new play readings by local playwrights.

For the past few months, LAVA has hosted a theater incubation series, during which six local playwrights have workshopped and developed new plays. Now they’re ready for an audience! Join The LAVA Center and the playwrights (Christine Benvenuto, P. H. Crosby, Nina Gross, Jan Maher, Silvia Martinez-Howard, and John McDonnell Tierney) for a festival of staged readings in June.

Schedule:

An Interview with Archie by John McDonnell Tierney
Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3, 7 p.m.

Interview with Archie is a new play by John McDonnell Tierney that focuses on two themes — faith and dementia — and yet it is not “about” either. Rather, this play explores the experience of two men-of-the-cloth, one old, one young, with faith and dementia. Archie, a 90 year old retired Catholic Bishop who doesn’t believe Heaven exists, meets Elijah, a 20-year old Evangelical Seminarian whose whole purpose in life is to get to there.

John McDonnell Tierney, aka “Jack McT,” is a composer and playwright with an Off-Broadway track record and numerous plays and musicals in his portfolio. His musical, Humanity’s Child, premiered at the New York Theater Festival and played four weeks at the Players Theatre Off- Broadway in 2019. Extraordinary Hero, Jack’s full-length musical for virtual theater, was streamed on the Rogue Theatre Festival, 2022 and a trio of his comedies will play at the 2023 Festival in July. He is a contributing playwright to several online theater groups and is a director and actor as well. Jack works out of his home studio in Heath, MA where he lives with his wife Patricia and cat Willow.

“750%” by Christine Benvenuto

Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” adapted by P. H. Crosby

Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17, 7 p.m.

“750%” by Christine Benvenuto

A seemingly random encounter on a subway platform brings two people together. As their story unfolds, who they are and who they are to each other, their shared past and separate futures, turn out to be as labile and unstable as the intimate partner violence that has brought them to this moment.

“750%” will be performed by Shannon Chabot and Mary Budzn.

Christine Benvenuto’s plays have been produced by the Boston Theater Marathon, the Sixth Festival in NYC, The Braid in Los Angeles, and online. Her play Bridges was part of The LAVA Center’s social justice series last year. Her play Destination Wedding received its first public reading at LAVA last summer, and its second at Clamour Theater in Northern Florida as part of a playwright’s residency in March. She is the author of two books published by St. Martin’s Press, and her short stories, essays, and articles have appeared in many newspapers, magazines and anthologies.

Melville’s “Bartleby the Scrivener” adapted by P. H. Crosby

Who is Bartleby? Where did he come from? What does he want? The head of a Wall Street law firm in the 1860s wrestles with proper management of his office staff, including a strange newcomer.

“Bartleby the Scrivener” will be performed by Rick Malone, Tracy Trimm, Kevin McVeigh, Becca Mandel and Andra Daunhauer.

P. H. Crosby, a resident of Gill, is a writer of poetry, fiction and drama, published in Changing Men, The Other Side, War, Literature and the Arts (WLA), the Montague Reporter, Sparks of Calliope, Friends Journal, Blue Unicorn and other venues. A short play, “A Change in Climate” was produced online in 2020 by The LAVA Center, where Crosby’s adaptation of George Gissing’s The Odd Women also received a two-part stage reading in 2022 and 2023. Crosby has a Master of Arts in Teaching from Brown University and studied English and Drama at Catholic University and Greenfield Community College.

As We Were: Nine Days in October by Jan Maher

Friday and Saturday, June 23 and 24, 7 p.m.
Over sixty years ago, Bob Dylan recorded his first album, "Rocky and Bullwinkle" dominated Saturday morning television, and the world teetered on the precipice of all out nuclear war.

As We Were: Nine Days in October focuses on the impact of the Cuban Missile Crisis on the lives of ten students on a Midwestern campus. In the lounge of their small college, the students play chess, cards, and guitars; discuss homework, music, and Halloween pranks; flirt and banter. Abruptly, their cocoon is ripped open by JFK’s announcement that the world is on the brink of nuclear war. Each is wrenched into stark confrontations with identity, sexuality, values, mortality, themselves, and each other.

The Cuban Missile Crisis ends a mere nine days after JFK’s speech to the nation, but during that time the students and their world—our world—are forever changed.

Playwright Jan Maher was a freshman in college during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Events depicted are, as they say, “based on a true story,” though Maher freely admits she is primarily a writer of fiction.

All plays are also viewable online for two weeks. For more information and tickets, visit https://thelavacenter.org/on-the-boards/

On the Boards is made possible by grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the local cultural councils of Greenfield, Bernardston, Gill, Leyden, and Northfield.

Tickets are available at tinyurl.com/thecake23 at $25 general admission, with discounted tickets for students, seniors, and audience members 25 and under. Silverthorne Theater Company is a proud participant in the Card to Culture program, offering $5 tickets to SNAP/EBT, WIC, and ConnectCare cardholders.

The cast is anchored by Elizabeth Aspenlieder*, a company member at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, where she has performed in over 30 plays over the past 20 years, including Regan in King Lear, Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hermione in A Winter’s Tale.  She won Boston’s prestigious Elliot Norton award for her solo performance in the comedy Bad Dates and won a 2019 Berkie Award for best supporting actor in The Waverly Gallery.  In The Cake, Aspenlieder will be taking on the role of Della, a conservative baker who faces a crisis of conscience.

Rounding out the cast are four veteran actors, listed here with their previous Silverthorne Theater credits: Tahmie Der (The Taming, Christmas at Pemberley, Intimate Apparel), Gabriel Levey (Intimate Apparel), Claudia Maurino (Christmas at Pemberley) and Sam Samuels* (The Mystery of Irma Vep, Tar2f!).

When Della, a North Carolina Baker and devout Christian, is asked to bake a wedding cake for her best friend’s daughter, she is overjoyed. But that joy is short-lived when she learns that the intended is another bride and realizes she is faced with an agonizing choice between faith and family. Struggling to reconcile her deeply-held belief in “traditional marriage” and the love she has for the woman she helped raise, Della finds herself in strange new territory.  Inspired by a story still in the headlines, this marvelously funny play is proof that love is the key ingredient in creating common ground.

“… a peek into an expansive world – a hallucinatory, symbol-heavy tour of Carrington’s fervid mind.” – New York Times Critic’s Pick

Inspired by the visual art, writings and life of British-born Mexican artist Leonora Carrington and her mentorship of a long line of male artists, this surreal performance unfolds an encounter between Leonora and Adán (everyman) and portrays the magic, mystery, and humanity found in Carrington’s work.

On both days, critic and author Susanne Christensen will give an introduction to the performance in the foyer. She has written the book Leonora’s Journey, in which she undertakes a journey in Leonora Carrington’s footsteps, to New York, Mexico and California, in search of Carrington’s life and work.
