December 30 - January 19, 2021

In light of the Omicron variant, it looks like this New Year might be a quieter one than originally imagined. First Night Northampton has cancelled all indoor in-person events (there will still be fireworks, the ball drop, and streamed performances available from a few venues), and several other things have been cancelled or postponed as well. I would strongly encourage you to check with a theatre ahead of time if you are planning to attend something in the next few weeks - and don't forget to bring your mask and your vaccination card with you! I'm bringing back the Virtual Performance section as a few more virtual options pop back up - including an exciting new audio play from Real Live Theatre. Happy New Year!

The next issue will include events from January 6 - 26. Submit upcoming events via the link below or by emailing me before Tuesday at midnight. Any questions, comments or feedback? Email me at pioneervalleytheatre@gmail.com

Where We Go From Here: Reflections on 2021
by HowlRound Theatre Commons

From the article:

2021 was a strange year overall and an even stranger year to celebrate a milestone birthday. 26 January 2021 marked the ten year anniversary of a convening called From Scarcity to Abundance that the HowlRound co-founders (Dr. P. Carl, David Dower, Jamie Gahlon, and Vijay Mathew) produced, which was hosted at Arena Stage under the auspices of the American Voices New Play Institute. This convening served as a launch of both the HowlRound Journal and the New Play Map (2011-2016), and as we see it, was the launch of HowlRound—a now global community of theatremakers who believe in sharing knowledge and access through a commons-based framework. Once upon a time, we dreamed of hosting a giant convening in 2021 to mark this birthday. We had hoped to bring people together in Boston both to celebrate the work of the last ten years and to plan for the next twenty. And then 2020 happened.

The Rise and Fall
of Holly Fudge

by Trista Baldwin

It is Christmas 2020, and Carol is a hard-working single mother who makes award-winning "Holly" fudge, named after her daughter. She serves it every holiday. She gifts it to her friends and co-workers. She's determined that this year won't be any different, even if she has to wear a mask while whipping up her famous dessert. But with her daughter's girlfriend crashing Christmas, her neighbor's new-found love of confectionery, and the protests erupting on her front lawn, Carol is finding it tough to make this the most wonderful time of year. Tickets: contact box office.

Witness, the latest project from Arlekin’s Zero Gravity (zero-G) Virtual Theater Lab, is a new documentary theater piece about Jewish immigration in the face of antisemitism. The piece is inspired by the journey of the MS St. Louis, which left Hamburg in 1939 with over 900 Jewish people on board and headed to Cuba only to be turned away, leaving the passengers stranded with nowhere to go and no escape. Witness shares stories of Jewish immigrants from around the globe through an interactive virtual theater experience at the nexus of film, theater, and video games.
Tickets: $12-$45.

THE SWEATER

Seeking talent for readings - This is a true story

Klaus.  UCLA Professor and Psychiatrist in Beverly Hills. 40 years old.  Born and raised in Berlin with a Berlin accent. Full head of hair, with twinkling eyes from time to time, a kindness that shows through.  And a hidden part he can’t digest, what he calls ‘soldier Klaus’ from his time in Hitler’s army.

Ruth.  A Polish upper class woman of 48, once married to a Polish Government Official who escaped to England with their two sons when Hitler invaded, and left her behind, where she was sent to Auschwitz.  She stands tall and defiantly straight; lets her gray hair show.  Educated Polish accent.  Very bitter, cynical, trusts nothing.  Has no relations with her ex-husband or sons.

The Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD), which specializes in the art of performing, teaching, and directing staged combat/theatrical violence has announced a new initiative, “Expand, Educate, Empower” (EEE), providing free stage combat training to underserved communities. It is an effort by the SAFD to make stage combat training accessible to underserved artists and theatre professionals. This program is a nationwide search for educational organizations and institutions, performing arts groups, and community or professional theatres that are interested in participating.

The program offers 30 hours of training in one weapon discipline by a teacher and assistant certified by the SAFD. There is also an opportunity to certify in the said weapon discipline at the end of the course, also free of charge. If you would like to request a specific individual that is a member of the SAFD that you already have a relationship with, you are welcome to do so on the application.

I thought this may be a program fitting your organization/theatre, and would highly encourage you to apply. For more information and the application portal, please visit https://safd.org/train/development/eee/. You may also contact development@safd.org for any questions.

January 15 at 10:00 AM
Happier Valley Comedy Theater (1 Mill Valley Rd, Hadley, MA)

Does the idea of performing in front of people scare the dickens out of you?
Have you ever watched improv and thought, "I could never do that!"?
Have you ever watched improv and thought, "Hell, I could definitely do that!"?
Do you not give a flying fig about improv comedy but want to learn some tricks to become more confident speaking in public and more mindful in the moment?
Interested in checking out what's going on at Happier Valley Comedy?
Are you curious about improv but you don't consider yourself a scaredy cat?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, "Improv for Scaredy Cats (And Non-Scaredy Cats Too!)" is the workshop for you. It's designed especially for the improv newbies, improv-curious, and anyone who wants to step outside their comfort zone.

Once you get started, you'll soon see it's not that scary after all.
Head of Happiness Pam Victor leads you through a very gentle, easy approach to improv comedy in a positive and accepting atmosphere where failure is disempowered. (At HVC, we believe it's only a mistake if you don't learn from it.)
Our main focus is to have as much joy and ease as humanly possible in two hours!

No experience necessary. Being funny is NOT required. The only requirement is a willingness to learn something new and have as much fun as possible.
