My Life As a Plus-Size Actress
by Bethany Hanna
From the article: I’ve been acting since I was six years old. Straight away I knew that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. I found my passion at the mere age of six! Not many people can say that. I have also been overweight since I was six. It didn’t affect me or my acting at that age. It’s cute to be a chubby child actress. It’s not a big deal, and it wasn’t a big deal for a little while. Until I hit the big age of eleven.

In acquiring the gadgets we use to connect, have we lost the reason for our communication: how to share our feelings, care for others, and love? Love and Information prompts us to see ourselves, our lives, our concerns, and all our longings in surprising new ways. Churchill’s dazzling language draws us into brief encounters with a series of characters, until the story that emerges is not about individuals, but about humanity and connection.

The Majestic Theater presents BUTLER  by Richard Strand
The Majestic Theater, West Springfield
March 3-April 3

Major-General Benjamin Franklin Butler was a successful Massachusetts lawyer in civilian life. Now, at the start of the Civil War, he is given command of Fort Monroe, a Union outpost in Virginia, which has just seceded from the United States. besides the threat of an attack, Butler has another problem — three escaped slaves have appeared at the fort seeking sanctuary. The law at the time requires him to return the slaves to their "rightful owner", a Confederate colonel who is soon to arrive. Shepard Mallory is one of these slaves. Both educated and defiant, he challenges the general to find a loophole in the law that will set him free. Butler is at once a comedy, a historical drama, and a biography — or, as one New York Times reviewer said, "Just call it 'splendid'."

The Academy of Music Theatre presents THE MUSIC MAN JR.
Thursday and Friday, March 10 and 11 at 6:30 PM
Academy of Music Theatre, 274 Main St., Northampton, MA 01060

Master showman Harold Hill is in town, and he’s got “seventy-six trombones” in tow. Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure? Based on the timeless Broadway classic, The Music Man Jr. adapts this masterful musical for young performers. The result is family entertainment at its best – a bold, brassy show that will have the whole town atwitter!

The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn’t know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, whose belief in Harold’s powers just might help him succeed in the end in spite of himself.

This is the sixth annual Academy Youth Production show. Past shows include: Fame Jr., Willie Wonka Jr., Camp Rock, The Phantom Tollbooth Jr., and last year’s Into the Woods Jr. Academy Youth Productions are performed by area youth ages 9-15, with full staging, professional lighting and sound, costumes and sets.

Valley Light Opera presents
Iolanthe Pub Sing

Thursday, March 10 at 7:30 PM
Mi Tierra, 48 Russell Street, Hadley

For the last few years the Valley Light Opera has mounted community sings in a local pub.

What are we singing? One of our all time favorites, Iolanthe. This is the one with the peers and the peris, the nobles and the fairies, great music and one of the best first act finales in the whole canon. We last did Iolanthe as our fall show in 2010.

We'll have food and drink service throughout the sing. Mi Tierra serves Mexican food and has a full bar.  If you'd like to order dinner, come before 7 o'clock. We'll start singing at about 7:30. You are the chorus singing all this wonderful music! We'll have a few scores available, but if you can bring your own or extras, please do.

And who's singing the leads? First of all, the Lord Chancellor - Steve Morgan. Then the two lords who were boys together (at least one of them was) - Lord Mountararat will be sung by Robin Parsons, Lord Tolloller by Steven Williams. Private Willis, who opens the second act, will be sung by Michael Budnick. Finally, the last male lead, Strephon, in love with Phyllis, will be Stephen Atkinson. The mighty Fairy Queen will be sung by Donna Griffin. Lorie Healy will be our Phyllis and the opera's namesake, Iolanthe, will be sung by Nina Pollard.

The singing will be accompanied on the piano by Glen Gordon, one of the original members of the VLO.

Our pub sings are music only - no dialogue, so things move right along. Come on along for a fun evening of Gilbert and Sullivan!

SILVERTHORNE THEATER COMPANY ANNOUNCES 2016 SUMMER SEASON OPEN AUDITIONS

Open auditions for the three shows in Silverthorne Theater Company’s 2016 Summer season will be held Friday and Saturday, March 18 and 19, with call-backs on Sunday, March 20.

The 2016 season will open with Molière’s The Miser, adapted by Miles Malleson, June 23-July 2. The classic French farce is rendered supremely hilarious in a contemporary (but respectful) translation! Ten actors will be needed for this production and casting will be gender/age/race/ ethnicity blind. Julian Findlay of Warwick directs. Rebecca Daniels, a Turners Falls resident, will direct Lee Blessing’s drama, Two Rooms. This searing depiction of the physical and emotional imprisonment of hostage-taking in the 1980s is startlingly immediate today. The play requires two men and two women, and runs July 14-23. Jeffrey Hatcher’s two-actor adaptation of the classic horror story, The Turn of the Screw, will be directed by Ellen Kaplan of Springfield. This is a tour-de-force piece based on Henry James’ masterfully creepy Victorian tale of two decidedly scary children and the adults in their lives. The play will run July 28 through August 6.

Silverthorne Theater Company is a professional summer theater organization performing in Greenfield MA. We are seeking actors for our third season, and give preference to Valley theater artists. All personnel are paid; we hire two Equity actors per season on a Special Appearance basis.

All auditions by appointment only.  For full audition information, visit our
website.  For questions, or to reserve an audition time, call 413-768-7514, or e-mail silverthornetheater@gmail.com.  All audition activities held in the Art Building at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, 574 Bernardston Road, Greenfield MA.
